Design.

Historically, schools were designed primarily for curriculum and instruction and the traditional buildings and classrooms are manifestations of this.

Our spaces dynamically influence culture and daily routines (see Renalds, Smith, & Hale, 2010). School playgrounds need a radical redesign by teams of architects, landscape designers, builders and scientists.

For brilliant inspiration, see Susan Solomon's book The Science of Play: How to Build Playgrounds that Enhance Children's Development, Rick Hanson Institute's Let's Play Toolkit for accessible playground design, and Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds for beautiful, thoughtful, and sustainable playspaces.
